Shehbaz won the prime minister’s election today after clinching 201 votes against his PTI-backed opponent from the Sunni Ittehdad Council (SIC) Omar Ayub Khan, who managed to secure 92 votes. PML-N, IPP, PPP, MQM and PML-Q join forces for coalition govt

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar on Monday stated that a large number of independent candidates backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged as the largest-single political group in the “free and fair” elections to the national and provincial assemblies. In a presser at the PM’s House, Kakar said that there might have been shortcomings or other minor issues, but, by and large, the elections were held in a manner in which the entire nation and the law enforcement agencies deserved kudos despite various security challenges. About the allegations of rigging, Kakar affirmed that these were generated through social media which were based upon misconceptions and were contrary to the ground realities. He insisted that the election results were an indication of transparency and non-interference by any quarters, adding that throughout the democratic history of Pakistan, people had always questioned the electoral process.   At least 67 Palestinians were killed in Israeli air and sea attacks on Rafah early on Monday, according to the Health Ministry in Gaza. The Israeli army says it rescued two captives from a house in Rafah’s Shaboura neighbourhood overnight. Israeli snipers have killed seven people inside Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis, the spokesman for Gaza’s Health Ministry says. Israel’s planned ground offensive on  Rafah  would “blow up” the captive exchange negotiations, Al-Aqsa television channel quoted a senior Hamas leader as saying on Sunday. Israel’s attacks on Gaza have killed at least 28,340 Palestinians and wounded 67,984 others since October 7. The death toll in Israel from the October 7 Hamas-led attacks stands at 1,139.
